Chapter Twenty-two
Sara had played in sold-out arenas and iconic concert halls, but she couldnât remember a better evening. When she and Abby started singing âGoodbye Earl,â the crowd joined in even before the chorus. They performed three songs, finishing with a cheeky version of âI Got You Babe.â Although Abby was a better singer than she let on, her real talent was doing impressions. Her Sonny Bono had Sara laughing so hard she couldnât sing her part, so Abby sang the entire song, switching easily between the voices of Sonny and Cher. As the crowd screamed their approval, Sara threw an arm around her and said to the people hidden behind their phones, âI hope someone got that.â They laughed, and she added, âBe sure to tag me!â
If there was backlash from Christinaâs departure, it wasnât from this crowd. The women were fun and seemed intent on making Sara and Abby laugh. Toward the end of the evening, a woman who had sung a Barry Manilow classic asked the DJ a question. He shook his head. She clasped her hands together and gave him a pleading look, but he shook his head again and mouthed, âSorry.â
Sara looked at Abby, who was dancing along with the current group of singers, not paying attention. She hopped off her stool and called out, âHey.â The woman turned, her eyes widening when she saw it was Sara. âEverything okay?â Sara asked.
After a short conversation, Sara walked back to the stage, spoke to the DJ, and took the microphone from the group of laughing women who had just sung âGirl Crushâ to each other. She waited a moment for the crowd to quiet before speaking. âLindaâyou know her as âCopacabana.ââ The crowd cheered. âMade a very special request on behalf of her best friend. EJ just lost her amazing father who loved and supported her unconditionally.â To the woman seated next to Linda, she said, âEJ, this week, Abby and I have learned that Corsetti fans are kind and supportive people.â She made a wide gesture encompassing the crowd. âYou wonât find a better group of friends.â She paused while the audience cheered. âLinda said youâre a fan of my music and asked if Iâd sing something for you. Abby was supposed to make sure I didnât hog the microphone and turn this into a concert, so I promise this is the only song Iâll sing.â She grinned when they booed. âThis oneâs not mine, but I wish it was. She nodded at the DJ and the opening piano notes of âSongbirdâ started. âFor EJ and her dad.â
Sara concentrated on getting the opening notes right. The crowd would be forgiving, but she knew Twitter wouldnât. When she felt comfortable, she looked out to the crowd for a moment, then turned her gaze to Abby and saw a shimmer of tears. Sara gave her a soft smile, and Abby smiled back sheepishly, wiping her eyes. Sara wanted to reach out to Abby, to pull her in and hold her.
